Week of action to support immigrant hunger strikers

Last week, the Mesa Verde/Golden State Annex (MV-GSA) hunger strike committee organized a series of actions to raise awareness and support for the detained immigrants on hunger strike in California’s detention centers.

On March 17, supporters of the hunger strikers organized a day of fasting and action, with demonstrations organized in front of ICE offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Supporters solidarized with the hunger strikers by fasting the entire day, taking on a small fraction of the physical burden that the hunger strikers are facing.

As part of the week of action, members of Workers’ Voice and Papeles Para Todos also held an event at UC Santa Cruz to build solidarity for the immigrant hunger strikers at the Mesa Verde (MSV) and Golden State Annex (GSA) detention camps, which we have previously written about. Over 50 students were in attendance, with additional participants connecting via Zoom. Speakers addressed the horrible conditions faced by the strikers in the camps and the urgent need for solidarity from students and workers.
