“There are billions of dollars for the banks and huge international corporations but there’s no money to pay the working class!”
The New York school bus drivers are being forced by New York City’s multimillionaire mayor to lead a heroic strike in defense of their salaries and benefits.
The NYSTA (New York State Thruway Authority) workers were surprised when the governor of the state of New York hit them with massive worker layoffs, and even more so to discover the complicity of their union leadership.
These are only two examples of the attacks workers in the most powerful country in the world are currently facing.
The world capitalist class, and its respective governments are imposing a brutal plan of attack on the interests of the working class and the popular sectors in order to recover from the economic crisis that they created. The result of this plan is decreased wages, massive layoffs, lost benefits, lost pensions and other labor and social rights that workers had won through years of struggle, including plans for healthcare, education, and general well-being. In addition, with their wars, pollution, corruption and impunity, the capitalist class had condemned the immense majority of the working class to poverty and misery.
But the capitalists cannot apply their plans by themselves. In order to impose their plans, they need the complicity of the parasitic union leadership, which acts as a containment wall to stop the struggles of the workers, to prevent them from uniting with the students and other popular sectors to confront this savage daily capitalist aggression against the workers.
The IWL-FI (International Workers League- Fourth International) & La Voz/Worker’s Voice considers it both necessary and possible to defeat the capitalist plans, as the European working class is showing us. In Europe, the working class overcame the obstacles the union leadership was systematically throwing in its path and carried out the first ever international strike to defeat the budget cuts and austerity measures that the capitalists and their governments are forcing down the throats of the world working class. The IWL-FI calls for a class struggle alternative to the union leadership that will unite the struggles on the basis of workers’ democracy.
