There is a serious contradiction in the U.S national situation. On one hand, the economy is recovering, with businesses investing again, lower unemployment, and rising family spending.
On the other hand, political problems are mounting: from the recently started war in Syria, to the Central American Immigrants Crisis, to the Racism and Police Brutality issues made evident by Ferguson events. Some questions that arise are: aren’t all these problems related? What can we do about them?
Whose war? Their war!
When this article was being finalized, U.S military had just started bombing Syria, as it had already been doing in Iraq for over a month. It is ironic and highly symbolic that a President that was elected against Bush’s war policies abroad, and who promised to put an end to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, has now decided to continue Bush’s wars, and start its own imperialist wars. More even so when the plan to intervene in Syria and dismantle the Islamic State (IS) was announced during the 9/11 anniversary.
In order to convince the American public opinion that it was necessary to intervene, Obama brought up ISIS – a reactionary armed Islamic movement – as a scapegoat. It is true that ISIS is growing, but the real reason for the intervention is not a second “war on terror”, but to take political and economic control over Iraq and Syria. The cruel and provocative videos released by ISIS killing two American journalists were the last straw.
It is critical to organize the resistance against U.S interventions in Syria and Iraq, as we did in solidarity with Palestine, when thousands marched across the country against the war and against U.S support to Israel.
Not one more deportation! Legalization for all!
Another promise made by Obama was to pass an Immigration Reform that included legalization for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. But instead of that, he deported over 2 million immigrants, reinforced border patrol, and implemented e-verify against undocumented workers.
Recently, the government had a hostile attitude toward the 60,000 Central American immigrant children that came to the U.S this year. Thousands were held in detention centers, molested, separated from their families and deported. Obama put pressure on the Mexican government to repress Central American immigrants crossing their territory. Now, he decided to delay any Executive Action on immigration until after the November elections!
We from Workers Voiceare organizing a campaign demanding legalization and full rights for all immigrants now! It is very important to bring the “Chicanos” Movement back to the streets again. No change is going to happen if we don’t fight for our rights.
Hands up don’t shoot!
Ferguson protests that emerged after the shooting of the black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer Darren Wilson, have sparked indignation and protests all over the country, and internationally. The reason for such a rapid rising, is outrage over police brutality against black and Latino communities, which is a clear sign that racism is far from over in the U.S., and also that police is not out there to “serve our communities”, as we’re led to believe, but to protect the wealthy from “the poor” and from any type of social unrest. Mobilizations against police brutality must continue, as every major city in the U.S faces the same problems as the ones brought up in Ferguson.
Unite our Struggles against the Obama Administration!
For us socialists, the problems we face as workers and youth are all related: they’re consequences of exploitation and oppression imposed by Capitalism. We must fight against each and every one of our problems, and each partial victory is important. But the only way to achieve long lasting victories is identifying our enemies, and unifying our struggles against them.
The challenge for the working class and the socialist left is to unite the different struggles going on at this moment, and channel them against the ones responsible for this situation: the Obama administration and the Democrats, who talk about progressive reforms, but implement the same conservative policies as the Republicans.
United we can win!
