{"id":6549,"date":"2015-02-27T18:15:35","date_gmt":"2015-02-28T00:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lavozlit.com\/?p=6549"},"modified":"2015-02-27T18:15:35","modified_gmt":"2015-02-28T00:15:35","slug":"brazil-strike-at-general-motors-prevents-layoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/workersvoiceus.org\/es\/2015\/02\/27\/brazil-strike-at-general-motors-prevents-layoffs\/","title":{"rendered":"[Brazil] Strike at General Motors prevents layoffs!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lavozlit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10830764_788591954564770_8129837321897674829_o.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6550\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lavozlit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/10830764_788591954564770_8129837321897674829_o-1024x768.jpg?resize=720%2C540\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBRAZIL<br \/>\nWritten by\u00a0Sindicato de los Metal\u00fargicos de S\u00e3o Jose dos Campos<br \/>\nFriday, 27 February 2015 19:46<br \/>\nAfter six days on strike, the metalworkers of General Motors in S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos (Brazil) led the automaker to back off on its plan to lay off immediately around 800 employees, dismissing them after 2 months.<br \/>\nOn Wednesday, 25 a conciliation hearing, called by GM, took place at the Regional Labor Court (TRT) when the Judge and the Public Prosecutor proposed five months of lay-off plus three months of employment stability after returning for 650 workers as from March 9th.<br \/>\nThis proposal was approved at a workers meeting on Wednesday, but GM is still adamant in its plan to dismiss 798 employees and therefore didn\u2019t accept the proposal from the TRT.<br \/>\nBefore returning home, workers traveled on foot by the side road of Presidente Dutra Highway (the most busy in the country), demanding from the president of the country Dilma Rousseff (PT): &#8220;Dilma, don\u2019t allow dismissals at GM.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe <em>Metalworkers Trade Union of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos<\/em>, affiliated with <em>Popular and Workers Center (CSP-Conlutas)<\/em>, demands that the President signs a Provisional Act ensuring job stability for workers at that companies that were benefited with tax exemptions. Despite the government exemptions granted in the last year (between January 2014 and January 2015) automakers closed 12,800 jobs in the country.<br \/>\n<strong>Victory<\/strong><br \/>\nBut, after 6 days on strike with the whole production of cars and parts going to a halt, the company was seriously hit. Parts are missing at the plants of S\u00e3o Caetano do Sul (S\u00e3o Paulo state) and Gravata\u00ed (Rio Grande do Sul state) and threatens their own production.<br \/>\nOn the next day, Thursday, GM said it would accept the proposal made by the judicial authorities.<br \/>\nIn addition, the strike days will not be subject to discounts on the workers\u2019 payroll &#8211; the days spent on strike will be compensated throughout the year; there will not be any kind of retaliation against the strikers. During the lay-off period, the workers will receive their full monthly salary and it will not affect their Profit Sharing Program income.<br \/>\nThus, the strike which started on February 20 is over.
