As revolutionary socialists, we understand our task to be the forcible overthrow of all social conditions, not the election of more enlightened managers of the state. But elections constitute most people\u2019s only engagement with politics, so the opportunity they provide to discuss socialist ideas cannot be ignored.How should revolutionary socialists relate to elections? Should we support left candidates from ruling-class parties? Should we help the lesser-evil defeat the greater-evil? Should we run our own candidates, either independently or using other parties\u2019 ballot lines?What was Lenin\u2019s approach to elections and what aspects remain relevant to our work today? Join activists from across the country and beyond to discuss how Marxists should orient themselves toward electoral politics to advance revolutionary struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AUGUST H. NIMTZ is professor of political science and African American and African studies at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of several books, including \u201cMarxism versus Liberalism: Comparative Real-Time Political Analysis\u201d and \u201cMarx and Engels: Their Contribution to the Democratic Breakthrough.\u201d Last spring, the RSN held a study group on his book, \u201cThe Ballot, The Streets, or Both?,\u201d which focuses on Lenin’s approach to electoral politics and its roots in the work of Marx and Engels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAN PIPER is a union teacher, a member of Socialist Resurgence, and a current candidate for state representative in Connecticut. He and his comrades are applying a revolutionary socialist approach to his campaign, basically attempting to practice what Nimtz\u2019s book preaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
