He had some white and Native American ancestry that also had influence on his work.\u00a0 Hughes wrote many poems that were supportive of the history and culture of Black people and for a while in the 1930s was a sympathizer of the Communist Party. The poems \u201cThe Negro Speaks of Rivers\u201d and \u201cDemocracy\u201d express some of his core beliefs.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><strong>&#8220;A Negro Speaks of Rivers&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve known rivers:<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the<br \/>\nflow of human blood in human veins.<\/p>\n<p>My soul has grown deep like the rivers.<\/p>\n<p>I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.<br \/>\nI built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.<br \/>\nI looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.<br \/>\nI heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln<br \/>\nwent down to New Orleans, and I&#8217;ve seen its muddy<br \/>\nbosom turn all golden in the sunset.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve known rivers:<br \/>\nAncient, dusky rivers.<\/p>\n<p>My soul has grown deep like the rivers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><strong>\u201cDemocracy\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Democracy will not come<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Today, this year<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Nor ever<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Through compromise and fear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">I have as much right<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">As the other fellow has<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">To stand<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">On my two feet<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">And own the land.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">I tire so of hearing people say,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Let things take their course.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Tomorrow is another day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">I do not need my freedom when I&#8217;m dead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">I cannot live on tomorrow&#8217;s bread.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Freedom<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Is a strong seed<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Planted<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">In a great need.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">I live here, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">I want freedom<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:40px;\">Just as you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mypoeticside.com\/show-classic-poem-13652\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/mypoeticside.com\/show-classic-poem-13652<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an African American poet writing during the \u201cHarlem Renaissance\u201d of the 1920s.
